TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME. FOLLOWING THE LORD MEANS NOTHING LESS THAN THE CROSS: OFFERING OURSELVES WITH JESUS AS A LIVING SACRIFICE AND NOT CONFORMING OURSELVES TO THIS WORLD. FOLLOWING HIM WILL ENTAIL DERISION AND SCORN, YET THE LORD IS OUR HELP.
APOSTLESHIP OF PRAYER: INTENTIONS RECOMMENDED FOR YOUR PRAYERS BY THE HOLY FATHER, POPE FRANCIS, FOR SEPTEMBER 2017: POPE’S INTENTION FOR EVANGELIZATION: PARISHES. THAT OUR PARISHES, ANIMATED BY A MISSIONARY SPIRIT, MAY BE PLACES WHERE FAITH IS COMMUNICATED AND CHARITY IS SEEN.
MONDAY, SEPT. 4TH IS LABOR DAY. LET US BE GRATEFUL FOR THE OPPORTUNITIES FOR GOOD AND PRODUCTIVE WORK ENJOYED BY SO MANY, AND COMMIT OURSELVES TO THE TASK OF DOING OUR WORK RESPONSIBLY AND WELL. IT IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO RECOGNIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF WORK AND THE DIGNITY OF WORKERS. LET US GIVE THANKS FOR THE SATISFACTION WE RECEIVE FROM OUR LABORS. AS STUDENTS, TEACHERS AND STAFFS WILL BE RETURNING TO SCHOOL, WE PRAY THAT THEY WILL HAVE A RICHLY REWARDING YEAR.
OUR NEXT PARISH COUNCIL MEETING WILL BE ON TUESDAY, SEPT. 12 AT 7:30PM.
A TRUE OPPORTUNITY FOR A SHORT—BUT IMPORTANT SPIRITUAL TRIP IS TAKING PLACE ON SAT., OCT. 21ST. TO THE BASILICA OF THE NATIONAL SHRINE OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION IN WASHINGTON, D.C. THE FULL DAY TRIP INCLUDES MASS, DEVOTIONAL PRAYERS, CATECHETICAL PRESENTATIONS AND THE OPPORTUNITY FOR RECONCILIATION. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION, PLEASE CONTACT THE PILGRIMAGE OFFICE AT 973-827-8030.

The devastation caused in the Texas/Louisiana region by Hurricane Harvey is staggering. It will take months and even years for people to recover from the storm. As always, our people want to help where their donations will do the most good.
I ask every parish to take up a second collection the weekend of September 30/October 1 to help the hundreds of thousands suffering from Hurricane Harvey. That weekend was selected since it will not conflict with the preparations for the Bishop's Annual Appeal which also does so much to help those in need.
Please send the proceeds from your parish as soon as possible to our Diocesan Finance Office. The notation on the check should indicate: Hurricane Harvey. The diocese will then send these funds directly to Catholic Charities USA. A network has been set up of all the Catholic Charities agencies in Texas, Louisiana and any other affected areas. They are already in position and getting resources directly to the needy.
In the words of the collect for "An End to Storms" in the Roman Missal: "O God, to whose commands all the elements give obedience, we humbly entreat you that the stilling of fearsome storms may turn a powerful menace into an occasion for us to praise you. Through our Lord, Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever." Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Arthur J. Serratelli, S.T.D., S.S.L., D.D. Bishop of Paterson
